Meeting Appreciation December 18, 2018

December 18, 2018

Dear Aiken High School Rotary Interact Club Heroes,

Thank you for coming to our December 18, 2018, meeting. I know there was a lot going on (the movie on the football field, the track meet, exams, etc.), but we still had a good meeting because you guys are awesome.

Mr. Darius Robinson from Affect the Culture came and he took all the pictures and shot all the little videos he needs for promo materials for our Better Campaign (5 Random Acts of Kindness). That was fun.

And we got our 2018 – 2019 Free Rice team going, too. The new web site made that a challenge, but we managed, right? We helped feed a few hungry people, didn’t we? We’ll have a few more Free Rice meetings later in the year.

If I don’t see you before our Winter Break, have a wonderful couple of weeks off and we’ll see each other in 2019!

Sincerely,

Better Campaign 2018 – 2019

December 16, 2018,

Dear Aiken High School Rotary Interact Club Heroes,

Well, this is exciting: Our club has been asked to spearhead the Better Campaign at Aiken High School. This is a wonderful service opportunity, we appreciate being asked to take the lead, and we’re going to do this very well. (We always do, right?)

So, what is the Better Campaign ? It is a program that aims to reduce division and conflict and promote love and respect in society by encouraging everyone to perform random acts of kindness, especially for people who “don’t look like you.”

It’s easy to participate and it’s going to be a lot of fun! You just:

Santa Claus is coming to town!

We’ll talk more about this at our next meeting on Tuesday, December 18, 2018.

As always, thank you for being a kind, generous human being.

De-Stress!

December 16, 2018

Dear Aiken High School Rotary Interact Club Heroes,

Semester exams begin tomorrow. I know that means some of you will be stressed. Grades do matter, of course, and that means that the next four school days will make some of you anxious, maybe even worried. I hope you know that it is absolutely normal to feel this way, sometimes (not always, sometimes). The truth is that no one gets to live a 100% stress-free life, so it is important to learn to manage the stress you cannot avoid.

The following article is meant for sponsors of Kiwanis Builders Clubs, but you may find it helpful:

Stress is part of life. We can’t ignore it or run away from it, but we can learn to manage our response to stressors. When we do this we’re more optimistic, think more clearly, learn more effectively, feel more connected to others and are better at responding instead of reacting.

Before we can learn to manage our stress response, we need to know what stress feels like in the body. Knowing this helps us recognize what’s happening so we can act. Take a moment to think about what you feel when experiencing stress. Does your heart race? Do you feel jittery or ill? Do you lose focus and shut down? Think about what situations evoke these feelings.

Now that you know what to watch for, embrace the calm in these situations by doing one of the following practices based on Neuroscience, Positive Psychology and Mindfulness. Share these practices with club members to help them manage their stress…

As always, I thank you for being a good, decent person with service in your heart.

Yours,
